Nolvadex
Nolvadex is an antiestrogen drug. The active ingredient in Nolvadex is tamoxifen which is dispensed as oral tablets (10mg and 20mg).
Drug Uses
Nolvadex is prescribed to treat breast cancer as well as cancer that has spread to other areas of the body. Nolvadex is especially effective in treating estrogen associated cancers. Nolvadex is also prescribed to women who have a high risk of developing breast cancer.
Dose
Nolvadex must always be used as directed. Do not make adjustments to the dose before speaking to a doctor. Nolvadex is often used long-term.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, it may be taken when you remember. However, do not take the missed dose near the time of the next scheduled dose. In this case, ignore the missed dose. Never double-up on a dose.
Warnings and Precautions
Do not use Nolvadex if you are allergic to tamoxifen.
While Nolvadex can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, this drug can increase the risk of uterine cancer. Women using Nolvadex should have regular check-ups.
Before using Nolvadex, you must give your doctor full details of your medical history and other medications that you use. These include herbal medicines and vitamin supplements. Nolvadex can react badly with some medications.
Nolvadex can harm an unborn fetus therefore pregnant women should not use this drug. If a woman becomes pregnant while using Nolvadex she should inform her doctor immediately. Nolvadex is passed into breast milk so women should not breast-feed while using Nolvadex. If the use of Nolvadex is essential then it is advisable to stop breast-feeding while taking Nolvadex.
While using Nolvadex, women should undergo gynecological check-ups regularly. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any changes in the menstrual cycle, abnormal bleeding, or pelvic pain.
Nolvadex can produce high levels of calcium which can be dangerous. Tell you doctor if you have lost your appetite or if you experience weakness or pain in your muscles.
Possible Side-effects
Call for emergency assistance if any of the following symptoms of allergy occur: difficulty in breathing, hives, or swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face.
Contact your doctor if any of the following serious side-effects occur: abnormal menstrual periods, abnormal bleeding or discharge, coughing up blood, chest pain, loss of libido, dark urine, fever, chills, depression, sore throat, pelvic or groin pain, breast lump, breast pain, weakness on one side of the body, swelling or pain in the legs, skin rash with peeling or blisters, chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, stomach pain, sudden headache, swelling of the legs or arms, vision problems, speech problems, or jaundice.
Less serious side-effects can include constipation, hot flashes, bone or muscle pain, fatigue, vaginal discharge, or weight loss.
Contact your doctor if any uncomfortable symptoms occur, or persist.
Overdose
If overdose with Nolvadex is suspected, call for emergency assistance immediately.
Storage instructions
Nolvadex must be kept away from children and stored in a dry, cool place away from sunlight and moisture.
